Postpartum Home Visits

A registered nurse makes a visit to the home to assess mother and newborn, who is on the child health roster for the State of North Carolina.

The mother's assessment includes blood pressure check, temperature, heart and lung, fundal heigh and incision (if applicable).  Teaching for the mother includes diet, exercise, parenting issues, immunizations for adults, home safety, smoking and birth control issues.

The newborn assessment is a complete head to toe assessment, weight, color check (jaundice), problems with feeding.  Literature is discussed or demonstrated related to the care of the newborn.  Shaken baby syndrome, stimulation for the new born, services the community offers (Medicaid), and care that is personalized to their own infant is discussed.  Referrals will be made fromthe home to teh MD, WIC and Social Services.
